Joint Pain Care with Acupuncture
Device overuse, athletic activities, repetitive motions at work, sleep habits- these all can cause eventual strain on our joints and lead to persistent pain. These are often mindless, habitual actions that we do regularly and not think twice about, but chronic strain leads to muscles and tendons tensing up and nerves get compressed and restricted. So joints like the wrist, elbows, hips, and knees can have issues of stiffness, locking up or general aching. It can be persistent and constant pain that gets progressively worse. Mobility is reduced and there could be both discomfort and weakness when using the joint. Over time, the long term constriction of the joint causes it to lack nourishment and then a degenerative joint results from this state. Conditions of degenerative joint disease can not only be due to aging, but also result from poor blood flow to a local area. There are athletes or manual labor workers as early as their twenties or thirties who may find their joints worn down and painful if their muscle tissues were not properly cared for.
You may also notice that the type of joint pain varies when the environment changes- like when the weather turns extremely hot or cold, when the humidity rises, or when you step into a walk-in freezer, for example. The pain might feel heavier, or burn, or be sharp and shooting. This can be the case with many arthritic conditions. You might find the fingers on your hands stiffening and worsening when the surrounding conditions change.
These conditions are conventionally prescribed steroids and anti-inflammatory medications. There may even be bone adjustments which may or may not help. These are fine options for temporary relief, but the key is to change the nature of the condition itself so the area can actually heal. That would be the only way to offer lasting pain relief, not when the body’s sensory functions are suppressed but when the body is healed.
Acupuncture and herbal medicine work in conjunction to heal the affected joints, its surrounding tissues, as well as systemic conditions that may be driving the pain condition.
What is needed is to release the taut musculature and restore nerve function. The body’s inflammation needs to be reduced and regulated, both in the local areas of pain and also the entire system under stress. In doing so, the associated tissues are relaxed, the bones and fluids are nourished, function is restored, pain is alleviated, and healing occurs from inside out.
